AUT research associate Christian Cook, one of the study's co-authors and a member of HortResearch's Human Performance Group, observed that caffeine increased athletes' release of testosterone during the performance test.

But getting a dose of caffeine by drinking your morning cup of coffee will not produce the same positive effects on physical performance, he says.

"There is something in coffee that reduces the performance-enhancing effects of the caffeine it contains."
